Ordinarily, the most ridiculously popular and merchandised Gundams are the “main” Gundams that belong to the main hero of a Gundam anime series. But there’s a major exception to this rule, and it’s a suit that’s only seen in a supporting role in the Gundam SEED anime! It’s one of the most popular Gundams ever, and it’s getting the highest-end treatment from Bandai: the METAL BUILD Red Astray Gundam is now available for order! But order soon, because it is selling out fast!
After being featured in the Gundam SEED Astray manga series, Junk Guild pilot Lowe Guele’s Gundam Astray Red Frame skyrocketed to levels of popularity that no one (even Bandai) anticipated.
Designed by Junichi Akutsu, the Gundam Seed Astray Red Frame Metal Build figure stands 9.5″ tall and comes with a variety of accessories, including nine interchangeable hands, a beam rifle, a backpack, two beam sabers, a beam shield, gerbera straight katana sword and sheath, and a special figure display stand.
I own far more figures and models of this mobile suit than I ever expected to, but the Metal Build Gundam Astray Red Frame looks like it may be the slickest-looking and most poseable version of the suit ever.
And if all those accessories aren’t enough to meet your dynamic posing needs, Bandai Tamashii has been nice enough to make an optional Gundam Seed Astray Flight Unit set available as well:
“This outstanding Flight Unit option set is completely compatible with the Metal Build Gundam Astray Red Frame from Bandai Tamashii Nations (sold separately)! Enjoy dynamic poses from the anime by simply rearranging the unit into various styles: stand-alone, suspension mode, or combo-mode! The set comes with a specially designed stage to support the display of each mode.”
I’m not sure that I’m going to want to display my red Astray using the Flight Unit, but I’d rather have it now than decide I want it later and have to pay crazy secondary market prices, so I went ahead and ordered the Metal Build Astray Flight Unit option set now as well.
And speaking of crazy aftermarket prices…
Given the out-of-this-world popularity of both the Red Frame Astray Gundam and the Bandai Metal Build line in general, I don’t expect that anyone will be shocked that this figure is selling like wildfire.
In fact, retailers such as Amiami, HLJ and BigBadToyStore all sold out of the Red Metal Build Astray Gundam within hours of putting it up for pre-order! Looks like this figure may be destined to join the Metal Build Destiny Gundam in super-expensive aftermarket territory.
But wait–if you didn’t order your Red Astray Gundam yet, there’s still hope…
The Red Astray Gundam Metal Build figure is now available for order, and is scheduled to be released in spring 2016. EE is still accepting pre-orders for both the Metal Build Astray and its Flight Unit–and they have free shipping–so they’re my top choice for getting in a late pre-order if you missed the boat elsewhere.
What are your opinions on the latest Metal Build, Gundam fans? What Gundam would you like to see get the Metal Build treatment next?
